FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE

“DO THE NEEDLES HURT?”

Many people fear needles due to unpleasant experiences with shots or injections, or having blood drawn. The acupuncture experience is nothing like this. Extremely thin needles, the diameter of a thread or human hair, when inserted correctly into an acupuncture point, may produce an initial tingling sensation, but the area remains pain free. Most patients are pleasantly surprised during their first treatment and find the experience very relaxing.

“ARE THE NEEDLES SAFE?”

Acupuncture needles are sterile, used only once, then discarded in a special container. They are completely safe.

“WHAT HAPPENS DURING A TREATMENT?”

Your first appointment consists of a detailed exam, consultation, and treatment. Oriental Medicine is tailored to the individual patient. Information is gathered from all the body systems, in order to diagnose and treat the individual’s problem. Tongue and Pulse diagnosis, unique to Oriental Medicine, are key diagnostic tools, and provide valuable information regarding a patient’s energetic imbalance and acupuncture diagnosis.

“HOW LONG ARE THE TREATMENTS ?”

Your initial exam and first treatment will take between 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Subsequent treatments last approximately one hour. Needles are generally left in place for thirty minutes, while you relax on the treatment table.

“HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?”

The number of acupuncture treatments a patient requires varies depending upon the ailment. Relatively simple conditions resolve in two to six sessions. More complex problems require additional treatment. It is important to realize this and be willing to commit to a complete course of treatment for best results.

 “DO YOU PRESCRIBE CHINESE HERBS?”

If needed, specific Chinese Herbal Formulas will be recommended for your condition, in easy to take tablets. I prescribe only Chinese herbs manufactured by American companies that have high purity and potency standards.
